1. What is Notepad++ and why do programmers use it?

If you think Notepad++ is just a "notepad" like the one that comes with Windows, you are wrong. Notepad++ is an advanced, free, open-source text editor for Windows. It features blazing speed and lightweight performance, making it the perfect choice for editing code and config files.

What makes it unique is its support for over 80 programming languages (Syntax Highlighting) and its ability to open huge files (reaching hundreds of megabytes) without freezing, unlike heavy editors.

Why is it the first choice?

  • Very Lightweight: Doesn't consume RAM like VS Code or WebStorm.
  • Free and Open Source: No subscriptions or hidden costs.
  • Expandable: Install hundreds of plugins to turn it into a full IDE.

2. Installation and Initial Setup

Before you start, you need to prepare the software. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Download

Go to notepad-plus-plus.org and download the version for your system (32-bit or 64-bit).

Step 2: Install

Run the file and follow the instructions. Choose "Create Shortcut on Desktop" for easy access.

Step 3: Launch

Open the program, you will find a simple interface. You can now start writing your code.

How to open the "Command Prompt"?

If you don't know what the terminal is, it's simply a black screen that allows you to type commands. To open it in Windows:

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard (or the Start button).
  2. Press Windows + R together to open the "Run" window.
  3. Type cmd then press Enter.
  4. A black screen (Command Prompt) will open. Type the commands we mention in the lesson.

3. Keyboard Shortcuts: Lightning Speed

Mastering Notepad++ means ditching the mouse and using the keyboard. These shortcuts will save you hours of work:

For Search & Replace

  • Ctrl + F → Quick search.
  • Ctrl + H → Replace.
  • Ctrl + Shift + F → Search in all open files.

For Quick Editing

  • Ctrl + D → Duplicate current line (without selecting).
  • Ctrl + L → Delete current line.
  • Ctrl + Shift + U → Convert text to UPPERCASE.
  • Alt + Up/Down Arrow → Move line up or down.

4. Plugins: The Superpower

What truly sets Notepad++ apart is its Plugin Manager. You can install plugins that turn the program into a complete IDE. Here are the best plugins you should install:

  • Compare: Compare two files and show the differences in color (excellent for editing code).
  • XML Tools: Format and arrange XML and HTML code beautifully and neatly.
  • JSON Viewer: Display JSON code in an organized tree format instead of one long line.
  • NppFTP: Connect to servers (FTP) and edit files directly from within the program.

How to install a plugin? From the top menu, go to Plugins > Plugins Admin, then search for the plugin, select it, and click Install.

5. Customization: Make the Editor Comfortable for Your Eyes

Code needs comfortable colors. Notepad++ allows you to change the theme, font size, and syntax highlighting colors.

Change Theme (Dark Mode)

Go to Settings > Style Configurator, and choose the Obsidian or Dark Mode theme to protect your eyes during night work.

Font Size

From the same Style Configurator menu, you can increase the font size (e.g., 14 or 16) for clearer reading.

Tip: You can save settings as a "Workspace" to return to them anytime with one click from the File > Load Session menu.
